Lake Reports

Click for Devils Lake, North Dakota Forecast
We will be updating this page often to report on the conditions on the lake. For the most current lake conditions, please call us or Email us.

We are seeing good ice forming on the lake with it fairly solid and in the 10 to 14 inch range. While some light autos have been observed on the mouth of Black Tiger Bay we still urge people to use only atvs at this time as we hear occasional reports of less than 10 inches. Walleyes have been fairly consistent in the area north of Cormorant Bay with jigs displaying a flash of red seeming to work the best in about 15 feet of water. The road bed on Black Tiger bay has had a lot of activity but I can't be specific about what is happening as people tend to not come back this way after they are done for the day. The perch bite has been a little elusive but we need thicker ice and more fishermen to find them. The season is already vastly improved over last year as to the numbers of Walleyes being caught.

Some nice catches of walleyes and northern pike were caught this last weekend with East Devils Lake being the place to go for the big northerns. Several fishermen went there and limited out on northerns in the 10 lb plus range. Walleyes were being caught in 23 to 26 foot of water in Black Tiger Bay using bottom bouncers and spinners A tremendous amount of walleyes in the 4 to 6 inch range have been reported indicating some excellent fishing in the future years. A lot of white bass and small walleyes have been observed off the dock in the evenings.

The area from Haybale Bay to the Wood-Rutten Road along the north Shore of the East Bay of Devils Lake has been showing a lot of activity lately with a lot of nice catches of walleyes being brought in. Gold spinners on bottom bouncers using leeches seem to be the preferred bait and tackle in either 6 feet or 20 feet of water as it seems there are 2 different levels that are working for the anglers. A lot of the anglers have been going to slip bobbers and having good results using that method as well.

While the fishing has improved I would have to say it is still pretty slow. Black Tiger Bay remains real slow for perch but there have some reports of perch being caught in the towers area of the main lake and the south end of East Devils Lake in the 25 foot Depth. Not any limits being taken but the perch that are being caught are nice sized. We are seeing some action for walleyes in the early mourning and late afternoon over by the Cormorant Island and up by Ruttens Point. The northern pike have been active about 3 to 4 miles north of the junction of 19 and 281 in the area where the bridge is over 281 on the Mauvis coulee with reports of fair catches of northerns. Small minnows are generally being the most in demand for bait along with a gold rapala jig for the walleyes. Have a good day.

I hate to put out a bad fishing report so I have waited for a while to file one. The ice on the lake is currently fairly safe as we are hearing reports of ice in excess of 20 inches. We do recommend using caution as we have noticed some new areas that have formed pressure ridges and we attribute that to the construction of the new bridge. The walleyes have been starting to bite in the area of Cormorant bay as I have heard several reports of success from this area. Perch are still remaining elusive and not responding real well although it has been so dead so long that I expect them to get hot and heavy as soon as the weather starts to settle down. The Perch that I have seen caught to date seem to be fair sized and being mobil seems to be the answer if you are willing to move quite often. Good Luck Bill at the Eastbay Campground

As of this date the ice is looking like it is in the range of 10 to 14 inches thick on the average. Of course we are finding some areas that are thicker and some areas that are not very thick yet and should be avoided for a few more days. The ice should be safe soon as the temperature is 3 above zero as of this mourning but we do advise atvs and snowmobiles only at this time although we are starting to see a few vehicles driving on the ice. The perch bite has been slow but the walleyes and northerns are doing fair if one goes into the shore lines in the evenings and the early am hours. Have a Happy New Year.

The big lake is finally frozen over for the season but it will be a little while before it will be safe to venture out with vehicles. Walking should be fairly safe as long as a person uses a bar of some kind to test the ice as they go. We will be providing an access point this winter but will not be renting out fish houses this winter as I am to short of labor to do adequate justice to this service although I know some reputable guides who will be able to help people out.

We are finally seeing the ice conditions get to where we feel that it is reasonably safe to drive on the ice but as always it is the individuals responsitility. I am hearing that probably the thinnest ice is in the 10 to 11 inches thick on the East Bay with a lot of it being thicker. The perch bite was fairly consistent on christmas day with a lot of the locals limiting out. On the 26th they where hot and heavy this mourning but as this afternoon it has slowed down. It seems that 15 to 25 feet of water is where lot of the action is with a lot of larger perch being taken this year and a lot of times if you are in the tree line we are hearing reports of people catching a lot of walleyes in the trees. Halis and Genz Worms seem to being what is probably working the best right now. We will be moving the ice houses out next week as we feel it will be reasonably safe at that time. Good luck.

We are starting to see some really nice catches of perch at this time. Last Saturday a gentleman from Mayville was in and reported catching 30 perch in 13 feet of water about 300 yards to the west southwest of the Black Tiger Bay State Park ramp. The report was that they ranged generally in the 10 to 12 inch range. Gold swedish pimple and forage minnows were the lure they seemed to like the best with him starting with minnow and then going to perch eyes for bait. The reports we have been getting generally make me believe we are getting larger perch this year than last and the season is just starting. The ice is currently 8 to 10 inches thick so we do not recommend taking a vehicle out on the ice other than snowmobiles and atvs at this time although with the cold snap it is thickening fast. Good Luck
